surreal paintings by Hugo Lugo

We wanted to share these paintings that we found by Mexican-born artist, Hugo Lugo over on BOOOOOOOM! We like how they appear quite serene at first, but given another look, maybe a bit eerie. They reference art conventions that are lofty and traditional – the paintings themselves are oil on canvas & rendered in a realistic fashion – but they also comment on more common items, like your high school note pad or a gift shop coffee mug.
There’s also something weird that happens in each painting: One has to either make a choice to simply observe the figure in the image (“That man is hunting deer.”). Or, mostly because we cannot make out the person’s face, we choose to identify with him and imagine ourselves in that position (“That’d feel strange if I was hanging onto a tree to keep from falling.”)
